With matchday 1 of the UCL season starting on Tuesday, we here at raensports would be providing insight on who the best MD1 captain would be.
Well, we all know that with UCL fantasy, we’ve got two shots at picking the right captain. In this article, we’d be looking at the best player to captain in the first round and also who a nice alternative would be, if your first choice captain doesn’t perform well.
How does the UCL Fantasy captaincy work
Well, if you’re new to UCL fantasy, here are a few things you should know about the UCL captaincy.
- Captaining a player means his points would be doubled for that matchday
- If your captain blanks, or doesn’t give you enough points, you can switch the captaincy to another player from your team playing on the second day of that particular Matchday.
- Once you switch captaincy, you can’t switch back if you aren’t happy with your captains new score
- You can’t select a player who has already played to be your new captain.

The best UCL fantasy captaincy strategies and options for matchday 1
Well, since we can switch between captains, the best strategy to use or deploy would be to always captain someone playing on Tuesday, so that if the person fails to perform, you can easily switch captaincy to some playing on a Wednesday.
Matchday one captain picks for Tuesday
In order to know the best captain choices available for Tuesday, let’s take a look at the fixtures and see which teams have nice fixtures and what players we should target.

From the fixture list, there are four standout captain picks for Tuesday’s games. We have the likes of:
Raheem Sterling
Sterling who just joined Chelsea this summer, could be a nice captain pick in matchday 1. Sterling has looked really good for Chelsea so far in the Premier League, with the English man scoring 3 goals so far this campaign.
He’d be looking to take that form into the UCL matchday 1 group stage match against Dinamo Zagreb. Raheem Sterling who is owned by just 4% of managers and priced at £9.5m is one worth considering this week.

Rafael Leao
With two goals in his match against Inter Milan, Rafael Leao is one man who is in red hot form and could be a nice differential captain in MD1.
Milan go up against Salzburg in matchday one and you’d be expecting the game to be exciting and full of goals. Rafael Leao is a good shout this matchday. And we all know, if he doesn’t perform as well as you want, you can always switch to another captain.
Karim Benzema
Last season’s top scorer with 15 goals, Karim Benzema is one player that a lot of UCL fantasy managers would be looking to captain this week.
Benzema has be in really good form, scoring 4 goals in the 5 matches he has played this season and you’d be expecting him to be handful for Celtic this matchday.
With a 50% ownership, it is quite obvious that a lot of managers would be looking to captain the Real Madrid talisman.
Erling Haaland
10 goals in 6 games, Haaland has lit the Premier League up and there are very few players who can do that. Man City play Sevilla this matchday and we’d be expecting Haaland to carry his impressive performances into this one.
He is a very good pick and one that could rival Benzema this matchday. Haaland is owned by 42% of managers and most likely would be captained by a huge amount of managers as well.
Here’s the result of a poll done on reddit, on who the best Tuesday captain pick is:

Haaland is currently leading the way in this poll with Benzema in second. A lot of fantasy managers seem to trust Haaland and that’s because of his impressive record both in the Premier League and the UCL.
Matchday one captain picks for Wednesday

Well, for our backup picks, in case our first choice players don’t perform well in the first round of games, we’ve got these players as Wednesday’s captain picks.
- Robert Lewandowski
- Sadio Mane
- Harry Kane
- Mo Salah
These four players have been in really good form and have quite good fixtures that you’d expect them to perform in. Lewandowski for one, is a player that has a pretty easy game, as Barcelona face Plzen at the Spotify Camp Nou. So if you have him in your team, then he’s one good player you can captain if your Tuesday option doesn’t perform really well.
Harry Kane is also another really nice option for Wednesday’s round of fixtures. Kane, has been in really good form in the Premier League and we’d be expecting him to grab a couple of goals this week.
