After a pretty interesting GW17, GW18 is here and it looks like it’s going to be a pretty interesting one as well. In GW17, we saw a lot of goals and a lot of the players we selected in our wildcard teams performed and played well.
This gameweek we’d be looking to do the same as we select and create numerous GW18 wildcard teams. In this article, we’d be creating three wildcard teams using three different strategies.
In our first team, we’d be going big at the back, in the second team, we’d be investing in midfielders and lastly, in the third team, we’d be going all in on forwards.
Some important things to keep in mind as you play your FPL wildcard in gameweek 18
As you create your GW18 wildcard team, here are couple of things you should keep in mind:
- First, you want to try as much as possible to select players that are guaranteed a place in the first eleven of their teams.
- We also want to keep the long term in mind when selecting players for our GW18 team. We know that double gameweeks are around the corner, so it would be good to select players that have DGW coming up.
- We also want to be aware of the time players who featured in the World Cup return to their teams. Some players have been given some time off – it won’t be nice to buy such players.
- We also want to try and have a solid bench, in case of rotations and injuries.

1. GW18 wildcard team: Going big at the back

This is our first GW18 wildcard team and in this one, we’ve decided to go big at the back.
If you take a good look at the team above, you’d see that we’ve tried to select a couple of premium defenders, and defenders that play for teams that have high clean sheet odds in gameweek 18.
We’ve got the likes of Robertson, Cancelo, Shaw, Trippier and Ben White – defenders who did pretty well in GW17. The good thing about this strategy, is that it allows you to pick and select a pretty good team all round.
If you look at the midfield and forward of this team, you’d see that it looks pretty decent. We’ve got the likes of Rashford, Martinelli, De Brunye and Sinisterra in the same team. Players who are on form and have decent fixtures as well.
Up top, we’ve also got Haaland, Mitrovic and Solanke who are also pretty good picks. The team is balanced all round from the starting players, to the players on the bench which makes it really good and great going forward.
In this team, we’ve also tried to pick players that have double gameweeks coming up. This means that when the double gameweeks come around, you’d have players that would feature.
2. GW18 wildcard team: Investing in midfielders

This is our second GW18 wildcard team and in this one we’ve decided to go all in on midfielders. We’ve tried to select two of the highest value midfielders in the game, in Mo Salah and De Brunye.
This second draft, is also a pretty good draft that has three premium assets – Haaland, De Brunye and Salah. But doing this, comes at a cost, as we don’t have enough funds to buy good enough players for our bench.
This three premium draft, is not one that we’d recommend. And that’s because we do think it’s restrictive and it doesn’t allow for proper utilization of funds.
We all know that the only way you get the most out of these premiums is if you captain these players, and there’s no way you can captain all three.
So, we do think that it’s better to have two premiums and then use the remaining funds elsewhere. Here’s another really good draft:

3. GW18 wildcard team: Going all in on forwards

This is our final GW18 wildcard team and this is the final strategy, going all in on forwards. In this wildcard team, we’ve decided to target a couple of pretty good forwards who have good fixtures and double gameweeks coming up.
It’s a pretty good team with a lot of really nice FPL assets in every area of the pitch. We’ve got a solid defensive line, a really good midfield, and a great attack.
We’ve also got 2.2million in the bank and that could be used to upgrade the bench, and it could also be used to upgrade other players that we’ve got in our starting XI.
One move you could make, is Mitrovic to Darwin. The reason why we don’t have Darwin in here from the start, is because of Mitrovic’s double in gameweek 19.
Which is a good thing to keep in mind when picking your GW18 team. Other than that, it’s a pretty good wildcard team that is also quite balanced.
Obviously, these drafts are for inspirational purposes and we know that if you use all the concepts in the various wildcard teams, you can come up with something really solid.
To help prepare you for GW18, we’ve decided to put together our predictions article. In the article we take a look at players and teams likely to score, keep clean sheets and players likely to get the most points.
