After putting together our player picks series article, we now want to create some GW17 wildcard teams. We’d be creating these teams with the players that we’ve recommended in our player picks article.
In this article, we’d be creating three GW17 wildcard teams, using three different strategies. In our first team, we’d be going big at the back, in the second team, we’d be investing in midfielders and lastly, in the third team, we’d be going all in on forwards.
Some important things to keep in mind as you play your FPL wildcard in gameweek 17
As you create your GW17 wildcard team, here are couple of things you should keep in mind:
- First, you want to try as much as possible to select players that are guaranteed a place in the first eleven of their teams.
- We also want to keep the long term in mind when selecting players for our GW17 team. We know that double gameweeks are around the corner, so it would be good to select players that have DGW coming up.
- We also want to be aware of the time players who featured in the World Cup return to their teams. Some players have been given some time off – it won’t be nice to buy such players.
- We also want to try and have a solid bench, in case of rotations and injuries.

To help you know the teams that have double gameweeks coming up and the teams with good fixtures, here is a really nice fixture ticker done by fpltips__:
Here are some of the teams with good fixtures:
- Manchester City
- Chelsea
- Southampton
- Arsenal
- Fulham
- Man United
- Liverpool
- Newcastle
Here are the teams that have double gameweeks coming up:
- Chelsea
- Man City
- Spurs
- Fulham
- Arsenal
So, when creating your gameweek 17 team, it’d be nice to have players from these teams in your wildcard team. And for budget player picks, here’s a really helpful twitter post by @RegretFpl:
1. GW17 wildcard team: Going big at the back

This is our first GW17 wildcard team and in this one, we’ve decided to go big at the back. In order for us to do this we’ve decided to target premium defenders that have good fixtures, double gameweeks and can give some form of attacking return.
Obviously in order for us to do this, we have to go for cheaper options elsewhere and in other areas of the pitch. Some of those cheaper options are: Almiron, Mitrovic, Rashford and Nketiah of Arsenal.
In this team, we’ve also tried to select a decent amount of players that have double gameweeks as well. This means we have enough Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and Fulham representation.
It’s a pretty decent team and it’s one that you could go with this gameweek. There’s also 0.6million in the bank, and if you want, you could upgrade Neco Williams to a Diogo Dalot.
We’ve just seen that Dalot is carry an injury and he’d be a doubt in GW17, so you might have to look elsewhere for a replacement. Castagne of Leicester is a pretty good option.

2. GW17 wildcard team: Investing in midfielders

This is our second GW17 wildcard team and in this one, we’re using the second strategy we mentioned earlier and that’s the going all in on midfielders strategy.
In this one, we’ve tried to target some of the best midfielders in the game. We’ve got a midfield five of: Salah, Mahrez, Almiron, Saka and Kulusevski – that’s a pretty solid midfield.
In order to do this, we’ve had to make a few tweaks to the initial team. We’ve had to reduce the amount of cash spent on our defense, and we’ve also had to let go of one of our other 6.5million forward.
We’ve now brought in Dalot and Adam Armstrong of Southampton. We saw in the fixture ticker earlier, that Armstrong has a pretty decent run of fixtures and so we think he could be a nice budget forward to target.

3. GW17 wildcard team: Going all in on forwards

This is the final GW17 wildcard team and in this one, we’ve decided to go all in on forwards. In this draft, we can clearly see that Kane, Haaland and Darwin Nunez of Liverpool, are the top forwards in the game.
Having these three players is also not a bad idea, as you can still afford to have a couple of really good players in other areas of the pitch. We have a solid defense of really good FPL assets and we also have a midfield that has pretty good players as well.
In terms of bench, we have budget players that are starters in their various teams. It’s a pretty balanced team that has a lot of solid players.

Obviously, these drafts are for inspirational purposes and we know that if you use all the concepts in the various wildcard teams, you can come up with something really solid.
