FPL drafts consisting of five defenders have been the theme of this FPL season, with FPL managers favoring the 5-3-2 formation. With defenders being in high demand, we at raensports, would now be taking a look at some of the best budget defenders for your FPL draft.
This is the third article of the budget FPL assets series. So do make sure to check the other two as links would be posted below. Without further ado let’s get right into it.
£4.0-£4.5million cheap FPL defenders
In this list of cheap FPL defenders, we’d be looking at defenders who are guaranteed starters, defenders with good fixture and defenders with high potential of returning points.
- Tomiyasu – £4.5million -Arsenal
- Lamptey – £4.5million -Brighton
- Patterson – £4.0million – Everton
- James Justin -£4.5million – Leicester
- Neco Williams – Nott’m Forest -4.0million
Tomiyasu – £4.5million -Arsenal
The Arsenal full-back who is valued at 4.5million is one of the most attractive defender in this price range. Arsenal are one of seven teams who have really good set of fixtures – this makes the 4.5million full-back even more attractive.
As FPL managers we all like to buy defenders who can keep a clean sheet and also have the potential of producing attacking returns; and that’s exactly what you’d be getting with Tomiyasu.
Arsenal are a team that keep clean sheets and last season they did just that, keeping a total of 13 clean sheets which was the fifth highest in the division last season.
Tomiyasu would be a really good addition to any FPL team – he’s a guaranteed starter, he can get you clean sheet and goals and assist points, he has good fixtures and he is 4.5million. I really do think he’s one you should consider for your FPL draft.
Lamptey – 4.5million -Brighton
Tariq Lamptey is yet another cheap 4.5million FPL defender that you could consider for your FPL draft. Lamptey isn’t one that would go straight into your team as Brighton have really tricky fixtures at the start of the season.

However, in gameweeks 4 and 5, they face Leeds and Fulham and if you have him as a bench player, then you could bring him into your side.
Adding Lamptey into your team won’t be the best way to spend 4.5million especially when there are much better options like Tomiyasu.
With Lamptey it’s better to wait and see how things develop before buying him. With that we’d say Lamptey is one we’d be avoiding for now.
Patterson – 4.0million – Everton
We rarely see defenders who are 4.0million have a place in the starting eleven. Nathan Patterson, however, looks like he could get a decent amount of game time for Everton this season. He is seen as Seamus Coleman’s replacement.
Nathan Patterson signed for Everton in January last season and has started no premier league game for the toffees so far. So, yeah Patterson is yet another wait and see on this list of cheap FPL defenders.
One player who isn’t a wait and see, that is in the 4million bracket, is Neco Williams – more about Neco Williams in a minute.
James Justin -£4.5million – Leicester
Here’s what @FPL_Architect has to say concerning cheap budget FPL defender, James Justin
Remember the 20/21 season when Justin was priced 4.5m but Pereira would “be back soon”? Anyway, Justin was extreme value for money and one of the best defenders in the game up until his injury, that ruled him out for large parts of last season as well. He’s now back fit and should be the first choice left back for Leicester. With no European games this season I expect Leicester to perform at a higher level and keep more clean sheets, making James Justin a potential bargain.
And all he’s said is absoultely true. James Justin has the potential to be a really good bargain at 4.5million especially as Leicester City don’t have any European commitments this season. James Justin also has decent fixtures which means the potential for both clean sheet points and attacking returns are really high.
Neco Williams – Nott’m Forest -4.0million
@FPLarchitect also had this to say about Nott’m Forest new signing, Neco Williams.
Williams is currently a Liverpool player but will most likely end up at Nottingham Forest very soon, in which case we’ll get a starting wingback for only 4.0m. He is also known for being very attacking. so despite the expected lack of clean sheets Williams could prove to be a great enabler this season.
Here are some reactions from FPL twitter
The prospect of a nailed on starting wing-back is a really exciting one, that so many FPL managers would be looking to capitalise on.
Neco Williams is one really good attacking full-back that is guaranteed minutes and he’d be the perfect budget enabler for any FPL draft. Here’s a good meme to end this series with.
