Getting started with FPL

How to create an FPL account

When you are creating your FPL account, you’d have to fill up three forms, one for: personal details, another for your favorites, and then the last form you’d fill is, your email preference.

What is FPL and why are over 9 million people playing it

FPL, or Fantasy Premier League, is a popular online fantasy football game that allows players to create and manage their own virtual teams made up of real-life players from the English Premier League.

In FPL, fantasy premier league managers are given a budget of100 million, to build their team and they must select a squad of 15 players from the Premier League.

why are over 9 million people playing it?

Now that we know what FPL is, the question is why are so many people playing the game? The answer is:

FPL is a fun and exciting game that allows players to test their football knowledge and management skills against others from around the world.

It is a fun game for those who are die-hard Premier League fans and for those who are just looking for a new and exciting way to follow the action.

Basically, it is a game for everyone and playing FPL, adds to the excitement and thrill of the Premier League.

Now that we know what FPL is and how to get started, it is now time for us to take a look at the rules of the game.

Selecting your fantasy premier league team

Once you’ve signed up and given your team a name, the next thing for you to do is to pick your fantasy team. FPL managers are always given a budget of 100million and you are allowed to pick just 15 players for you fantasy team.

You’re to pick two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards. You can’t select more than three players from a Premier League team, this means that the maximum amount of players you can pick from a particular club, is three.

You also can’t spend more than 100 million, your team and the players you pick must be within your budget.

Fantasy premier league deadline

Another really important thing to note about picking and selecting your FPL team, is that there is a deadline before the start of a gameweek. This deadline, usually ends 90 minutes before the first match of a particular gameweek.

Once the deadline passes, FPL managers can’t make any more changes to their fantasy teams. It’s important and also good practice, to always keep an eye on the deadline for each gameweek.

The mobile app has a timer that counts down to the end of the deadline, this would help you know how many hours, minutes or days you have left to make changes to your fantasy team.

How do players score points in FPL

According to the official Premier League rules guide:

Points are awarded to players for goals, assists, saves and clean sheets. Players can also earn additional bonus points if they are among the top performers in the Bonus Points System (BPS) in a match.

Goal Keepers, defenders and midfielders are the only ones who get points for keeping clean sheets. Other than that, all 11 players in your team, are expected to give you fantasy points.

What happens if a player in your FPL team doesn’t play

If a player in your FPL team doesn’t play, then a player from your bench would replace that player and the points scored by your bench replacement, is then added to your total points for that gameweek.

So, it is good practice to always put your best bench player first on the substitution list. The reason being, substitutions are made automatically and the player that’s first on your bench, is always going to be picked first.

The only time when the first player on your bench won’t be used as the first sub, is when it messes with your formation. So if you’re using a 3-5-2 formation and one of your defenders fails to play and then the first player on your bench is a midfielder, the game won’t bring in a midfielder for your defender and that’s because you can’t play 2-6-2.

Rather, it would bring on the defender that’s on your bench and if the defender is the third player player on your bench, then that would be the first sub it’d make.

Captain and vice-captain in FPL explained

When picking and selecting your FPL team, it is important to always pick your captain and vice-captain. Why is this important? Well, it is because the points earned by your captain, is usually doubled.

This means if a player scores 10 points in a gameweek and he’s your captain, then he’d give you 20points. The vice-captain however is only used when your captain doesn’t play at all in a gameweek.

If your captain fails to play, then your vice-captain’s points would be doubled instead.

Note: You can’t switch captains or vice-captain after the gameweek’s deadline has passed. Make sure to always pick the player that has the highest potential of scoring the most points in a single gameweek as your FPL captain.

Leagues in FPL

Once you have created an FPL account and picked your team, you can now play and be added to leagues. You can create your own league and invite your friends to compete, or you can join public leagues.

There are no limits to the amount of players that can be in a league, expect it is set by the league admin. You can join just five public leagues and you can compete in only 25 invitational leagues.

By default, everyone is added to the overall leaderboard and the winner of the overall league, gets a ton of prizes. We’d talk about league prizes later in this article.

How to create and join leagues in FPL

To create an FPL league you can login to the official premier league site, on the top navigation bar, click on league and cups, underneath you’d see a button with a plus icon that says “Create and Join New Leagues & Cups”

Click on the button, after clicking you’d be taken to this screen:

Then you decide whether you want to join a league, or you want to create one.

How transfers work in FPL

After the start of the season, managers are given one free transfer at the start of every gameweek. They can use this transfer to buy and bring in new players to their fantasy team – the transfer must be within their budget.

The one free transfer, can be turned into two, if a transfer is not made in a particular gameweek and is carried over to the next gameweek.

You however, can’t have more than two transfers, this means you can’t roll over your two free transfers a third time and get three free transfers.

If a fantasy manager decides to make more transfers than the free transfers he has, then four points would be deducted from his points that gameweek.

This means that if you have one free transfer in a gameweek, and then you decide to make two transfers, four points would be taken away from your total points that gameweek.

Player prices in FPL

According to official fantasy premier league rules, here’s how player prices work:

Player prices change during the season depending on their popularity among all the managers in the game.

For example, a player who starts at £7.0m and is transferred into a significant number of teams could gradually rise to £7.5m, or even higher.

Managers who own the player while his price is increasing will make a profit if they sell him at the higher price.

However, they must pay a sell-on fee of 50 per cent, rounded down to the nearest £0.1m.

So in the example of the player above who has risen from £7.0m to £7.5m, managers would receive £7.2m when transferring him out.

Do player prices increase and reduce in FPL?

Yes, FPL player prices do increase and they also reduce. The increment of players prices is based on popularity. If a player is being transferred in by so many managers, then his price would increase by 0.1million.

And if a player is being sold or transferred out by so many FPL managers, then his price would reduce by 0.1million.

In order to not be hit by the reduction in price, it’s good practice to sell players that are being sold by majority of FPL managers. If a player has a long-term injury, then it is better to sell such a player – keeping him could hurt the value of your team.

FPL chips

In the game, there are five chips that are given to fantasy premier league managers. The five chips are:

  • Wildcard(two times a season)
  • Free hit
  • Triple captain
  • Bench boost

The FPL wildcard chip

The most powerful chip, is the wildcard chip. The wildcard allows you to make total change to your entire fantasy team. You’re allowed to make and remove all 15 players from your team.

You still do need to work within the 100million budget. This chip is given to fantasy managers twice a season, one is given in the first half of a season and another is given in the second half of a season.

The FPL free hit FPL chip

The free hit chip is very similar to the wildcard chip, the only difference is that the changes made to your team, would only have an effect for a single gameweek.

The free hit chip allows you to change all 15 players in your fantasy team for just one gameweek, after the gameweek is over, your team would go back to the way it was before the free hit chip was used.

The FPL triple captain FPL chip

When the triple captain chip is used in FPL, the player who is tripled captained, would have his actual points tripled in that gameweek. You can’t have a normal captain and a triple captain in your team.

The bench boost FPL chip

Bench boost simply adds the points of the players on your bench to your total points in a gameweek. So, if the bench boost is played, you’d be getting the points of 15 players.
